BluegrassLast week, I read a great story in Orlando Weekly about a group of bluegrass musicians that get together to jam every Friday night in an Ocoee parking lot near the southeast corner of Route 50 and Maguire Road. Read the full story by Ashley Belanger.

With bands like Mumford & Sons bringing bluegrass into the mainstream, a new generation of fans is starting to give this mix of country, folk, and jazz a try. The Ocoee Bluegrass Jam is a great place to whet your appetite.

Those planning on attending this informal event, which typically starts around 6:30pm, should bring a folded chair.

Make a night of it: Ocoee is a bit of a hike for us, so we plan on adding dinner to the trip. Here are a few nearby options:

Yellow Dog Eats Café
1236 Hempel Avenue, Windermere
My friend, Bess Auer, recently told me about this place and I cannot wait to try it. Wait until you see the inside!

Soong Thai
9448 W Colonial Dr, Ocoee
Soong Thai is one of my absolute favorite Orlando-area Thai restaurants. It’s the real deal! Be sure to get the Thai donuts. In fact, get two orders so you don’t fight over them.

Chef's Table at the Edgewater
99 West Plant Street, Winter Garden
This upscale but warm downtown Winter Garden gem has won more local dining awards than I can count. It also houses the Tasting Room, which is a more casual option with a tapas-style menu.
