South + York opened up in a Winter Springs plaza at the top of Tuscawilla Road more than six months ago and has slowly but steadily created a loyal following of avid fans ever since. Inside the minimalist space where a chalkboard touts the name of Central Florida farms tapped to source the local focused menu, you won’t find fare typical of an area laden with chain restaurants and fast food joints. South + York is not cut from that cloth.
Owners Emily and Edgar Cruz each inform the cuisine here from a different culinary vantage point. She’s from the south and his roots extend to New York City, where he launched his culinary career at Gramercy Tavern.
The result is an artful combination of southern flavors made with an adventurous finesse that only comes from a chef with a serious passion for amazing food using as many local ingredients as possible.
On a recent visit, I fell in love with the Crab and Corn Stack, which I pray becomes a staple on the ever-changing menu. It was sweet and savory and served with a crunchy toast. I also devoured the South + York Burger, which was served with a fried green tomato on top and slathered with bacon jam. It was superb. If the house made sangria is available, don’t hesitate. There’s no liquor, but the wine and craft beer menu is extensive.
Besides a wonderful dinner offering served from 5pm Tuesday through Saturday, South + York also boasts a stellar brunch on Saturdays (9am-noon) and Sundays (9am-2pm) where you’ll find everything from blueberry pancakes to shrimp & grits all perfectly paired with the $12 bottomless mimosas!
